Summer school?

Summer school?

Our school offers summer school for some kids, to "keep them in the swing of things."

I don't mean for the kids who need to go to summer school in order to pass their grade that year (although I think it's all the same thing, here anyway); this is for kids who might benefit from staying on a school schedule, being reminded of what they've learned this year so they don't forget by next year, be given a peek at what they might be learning next year, that sort of thing.

I let my kidlet do it a few yers back, and he liked it... as for the "keeping to a school schedule" thing though, I don't think it did. It's 3 days a week, something like 8:30 til 11am - that's hardly school schedule :?: It did help him to retain what he'd learned that year, though. He forgets everything over summer vacation - heck, he forgets over Christmas vacation!

But our summer is usually "family" time, as much as possible... we try to travel some, go see the relatives, do "together" stuff....

I don't know... I need opinions :D Is voluntary summer school a good idea? Does it leave kids time enough to still be kids?

Ahh, those lazy days of summer!! The kids often look forward to the FIRST few days...and then it begins...Mom, I'm bored! Encouraging your kids to participate in a summer school program has its benefits, though. For example, the pseudo-structure of some programs offers SOME continuation of the basic school year... in most cases, though, the setting is much more like a social experience. Depending on the needs of your kid, investigate the options and make a decision based on what is best for all parties...including YOU!! Ok, parents?
